Blooming Trends from RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019

One of our favourite events in the calendar, we escaped our desks at Florist Find HQ for a day and put on our best walking shoes for a visit to RHS Chelsea Flower Show!

The Chelsea Flower Show has been held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in the heart of London since 1913, it is known worldwide for its show gardens, floristry competition, flower trend setting and floral installations. The Florist Find team spent the day exploring Chelsea Flower Show and have some great tips to share with you!

Beautifully Wild Blooms

There was a stand out trend at this years’ flower show – wild flowers. The show gardens were full to the brim of wild, country meadow flowers to create a back to nature vibe. Think daisies, blue salvia, hydrangeas, stocks, dahlia, sweet peas, freesia.

Our prediction is flowers from your local florist will follow this trend, creating charming hand-ties in a relaxed, rustic style. Greenery will also feature, with seasonal foliage, leaves and grass cleverly added for texture and scents.  This style works particularly well over the summer period, when British flower growers have a gorgeous selection of British blooms readily available for florists.

We Heart Alliums

The shining flower star of the show was Alliums – we saw them everywhere!  This amazing flowers featured in many show gardens, with their height, colour and texture helping to add depth to the summer meadow feel. Alliums come in an array of delicate shades of purple, lilac or blue and the ball of petals look like fireworks.

Alliums represent unity, and we predict you will see Alliums feature much more in weddings in 2020. Your local florist can also create an anniversary bouquet including alliums, which look beautiful alongside pretty pink roses.

Recycle and Reuse

Chelsea Flower Show had a strong message and inspirational ideas of how to reuse unusual materials, and we were surprised just how well it worked! The designers behind the gardens and displays sourced materials such as old rubber tyres and metals which starkly contrasted against the delicate blooms.

Some of our favourites were Facebook’s clever use of upcycled yacht sails to turn into deck chairs, the pizza oven created from disused metal and the tractor transformed into a flower and Gin paradise! 

Rainbow colours

Bright, bold, pastel, soft …. All colours and shades were combined together this year! We loved the daring colour combos, with strong orange and dark purples set against wild grass and delicate shades.

Watch out this summer for local florists making the most of a wide range of colour palette, combining a wild mix of flowers bursting with colour – we love it!
